Instruments

Mark Moreland is an internationally respected award-winning luthier. Trained in both instrument making and restoration, Mark has had the benefit of contact with master makers of today and masters of past ages. Through his restoration work, Mark has gained an intimate familiarity with the working methods, materials, and design strengths of the greatest old masters.

It is the unique capability of today’s violin makers to combine thorough knowledge of masterpieces of the past with recent research into materials and techniques that allows Mark to create such tonally and artistically successful violins, violas, and cellos. Each of Mark Moreland’s hand-made instruments is one-of-a-kind and they are only available in very limited numbers.

Violins

Mark Moreland uses a violin made by Stradivari in 1711 as the model for his violins. He currently has a model available for sale (shown below).

Violas

Mark has made four violas on a particularly successful and unique model by Andrea Postacchini. Two are currently available. The first viola Mark made on this pattern received a Certificate of Merit for Tone at the 1982 Violin Society of America competition in Salt Lake City. The second viola also won a Certificate of Merit for Tone, this one at the 1986 VSA competition. (In that same competition, Mark’s cello received yet another Certificate of Merit for Tone.)

This Postacchini model viola has a body length of 16 13/16”. It was selected for a viola tone demonstration at the 2002 International Viola Congress. It has Mark Moreland’s trademark deep, powerful sound, and is very even across the range.

Built in 2001, this viola is now owned by a professional player and teacher in the Pacific Northwest. The body length is 16 1/2”.

Cellos

Mark won a Certificate for Merit in Tone at the 1986 Violin Society of America competition. This is one of the top three competitions in the world, and a certificate from its judges is high praise. Mark builds cellos on a small Stradivari pattern, and also on a pattern by David Tecchler. Mark has built cellos on a small Strad pattern in the past, and is currently building cellos on a pattern of David Tecchler & Matteo Goffriller.
